Classical: neutral stimulus (spider) paired with fear (trauma) -> CS elicits CR (fear). Operant: avoidance reduces fear -> negative reinforcement maintains phobia. Evaluation: explains acquisition/maintenance; ignores cognition (irrational thoughts), preparedness (why spiders not flowers?), individual differences; CBT addresses limitations
