πŸ“Œ Key Points

Key Fact: Good question: specific, debatable, evidence-based, manageable scope (not 'Why WWI?' but 'How far did German naval policy cause WWI?')
Key Fact: Essay structure: intro (thesis + line of argument), themed paragraphs (PEEL), conclusion (judgement + significance)
Key Fact: Evidence: select best, not all; deploy precisely (dates, stats, quotes); weigh (corroboration, provenance)
Key Fact: Judgement: 'ultimately', 'more significantly', 'on balance'; avoid fence-sitting; relative significance
Key Fact: Citation: footnotes (Chicago) or in-text; bibliography; primary/secondary distinction

🎯 Learning Objectives

  • Formulate focused, answerable historical questions
  • Plan and structure analytical essays with sustained argument
  • Select, deploy, and weigh evidence effectively
  • Write balanced conclusions with substantiated judgements
  • Reference and cite sources appropriately

πŸ’‘ Worked Example

Exam-Style Question

Question: Write an essay introduction for: 'How far was economic crisis the main cause of the French Revolution?'

Model Answer:

The French Revolution (1789) resulted from a convergence of fiscal collapse, social tension, and Enlightenment ideas. While economic crisis -- state bankruptcy, grain shortages, regressive taxation -- provided the immediate catalyst, this essay argues that structural weaknesses of the Ancien RΓ©gime (privilege, absolutism, lack of representation) made revolution probable, with Enlightenment providing the intellectual framework. Economic crisis was the spark, not the fuel
