🏛️ Course Overview

GCSE Ancient History explores the civilisations of ancient Greece and Rome, developing students' understanding of key events, individuals and societies. OCR J198 is the only GCSE Ancient History qualification available. It has two papers: Paper 1 (Period Study, 50%, 1hr 30min) covering a broad chronological period such as the Persian Wars or the foundation of Rome; and Paper 2 (Depth Study, 50%, 1hr 30min) focusing in detail on a shorter period such as Sparta, Athens or the Roman Emperors. Both papers assess source analysis, interpretation skills, and the ability to construct sustained historical arguments.
