Model Answer:

Descending limb: permeable to water, impermeable to ions -> water leaves by osmosis. Ascending limb: impermeable to water, active Na⁺/Cl⁻ transport out -> filtrate diluted, medulla concentrated. Counter-current multiplier: flow in opposite directions maintains gradient
