When a ball is kicked with topspin or sidespin, the spinning surface drags a boundary layer of air with it. On one side, airflow travels in the same direction as the spin, increasing local air velocity and reducing air pressure (Bernoulli's principle). On the opposite side, air opposes the spin, creating high pressure. The pressure differential creates a perpendicular Magnus force swerving the ball.
