Lesson 1: Introduction: gender & inequality

Duration: 50 minutes

Starter Activity (5 minutes)

Quick Recall

Write down everything you already know about gender & inequality. Then check against the key terms: Sociology Exam Tips, UK Context, UK Context. Use a mini-whiteboard or paper.

Main Content (35 minutes)

Parent/Teacher Guide:
Before lesson: Read the script below. Pre-teach key vocab: Sociology Exam Tips, UK Context, UK Context.
If stuck: Re-read the revision notes (link above), then break the content into smaller steps.
Extension: See the Stretch & Challenge ideas in Lesson 4.
Teaching Script (35 mins):
Mins 0-5 - Hook: "Today: gender & inequality. By the end you will be able to answer exam questions on it unaided. It connects to the rest of Sociology because the ideas here recur across the spec."
Mins 5-20 - Direct Instruction: Work through the core ideas below one at a time; after each, ask your student to explain it back in their own words.
Mins 20-30 - Guided Practice: Model the worked example together, then let your student attempt the first practice question with guidance.
Mins 30-35 - Independent Practice: 2-3 practice questions from Lesson 3 below, with immediate feedback.
First Look

Start with the revision notes summary, then attempt: Explain why the gender pay gap exists and evaluate whether legislation can eliminate it.

Your student states one thing they learned and one question they still have about gender & inequality.

Lesson 2: Core Concepts: gender & inequality

Duration: 50 minutes

Starter Activity (5 minutes)

Review Previous Lesson

Quick recap: write 3 key points from Lesson 1 on gender & inequality. Check them against the notes below.

Main Content (35 minutes)

Key Fact: The gender pay gap: women earn about 8% less per hour (2023). Causes: lower-paid occupations, part-time work, career breaks, glass ceiling. The gap is wider for older women and ethnic minority women.
Key Fact: The glass ceiling: invisible barriers preventing women from reaching top positions. Only 10% of FTSE 100 CEOs are women. The 'glass cliff': women more likely to be appointed during crises.
Key Fact: Gender roles: girls socialised into caring/nurturing, boys into active/independent. Oakley: gender roles are socially constructed. This affects subject choices, career choices, domestic roles.
Key Fact: Feminist perspectives: Liberal (reform through legislation), Marxist (capitalism + patriarchy), Radical (patriarchy is primary oppression), Difference (intersectionality of class, ethnicity, sexuality).
Key Fact: Progress: legislation, girls outperform boys in education. Remaining: 8% pay gap, glass ceiling, domestic violence (1 in 4 women), women do twice as much unpaid care work, 35% of MPs.
Sociology Exam Tips: When evaluating gender inequality, always: use specific statistics, distinguish formal from substantive equality, and consider intersectionality.

Practice (10 minutes)

Q: Explain why the gender pay gap exists and evaluate whether legislation can eliminate it.

Answer: The gap exists because: occupational segregation, part-time work, career breaks, glass ceiling, discrimination. Legislation has reduced but not eliminated it because laws address direct discrimination but not structural factors.

Plenary (5 minutes)

Explain Back

Your student teaches the key points back to you without looking. Fill any gaps immediately.

Lesson 3: Application: gender & inequality

Duration: 50 minutes

Starter Activity (5 minutes)

Quick Recall

Recall the key terms: Sociology Exam Tips, UK Context, UK Context. Define each in one sentence.

Main Content (35 minutes)

Parent/Teacher Guide: Let your student attempt each question alone first, then compare with the model answer. Award method marks for correct working even if the final answer is wrong.

Q1: Explain why the gender pay gap exists and evaluate whether legislation can eliminate it.

Answer: The gap exists because: occupational segregation, part-time work, career breaks, glass ceiling, discrimination. Legislation has reduced but not eliminated it because laws address direct discrimination but not structural factors.

Q2: Compare different Feminist perspectives on gender inequality.

Answer: Liberal: reform through law - effective but slow. Marxist: capitalism + patriarchy - need to overthrow both. Radical: patriarchy is root cause - need fundamental restructuring. Difference: women are not one group - intersectionality matters.

Q3: Evaluate whether gender inequality has been significantly reduced in modern Britain.

Answer: Progress: girls outperform boys, equal pay legislation, more women in professional jobs. Remaining: 8% pay gap, glass ceiling, domestic violence, care work, under-representation. Conclusion: significant progress but full equality not achieved.

Lesson 4: Exam Practice: gender & inequality

Duration: 50 minutes

Starter Activity (5 minutes)

Command Words

Review what these command words require: state (one point), describe (say what happens), explain (say why), compare (both sides), evaluate (judgement).

Main Content (35 minutes)

Extended Answer

Extended question: Full-Mark Response Evaluate the view that gender inequality is the most significant form of inequality in modern Britain. <div class="

A grade 9 response will: present evidence for gender inequality; compare with class and ethnic inequality; consider intersectionality; conclude: gender inequality is significant but cannot be isolated from class and ethnic inequality. No single form is 'most significant' - they interact and compound each other.

Exam Tips: Gender pay gap = 8%. Causes: occupation, part-time, motherhood penalty, glass ceiling. | Glass ceiling = barrier to TOP jobs. Glass cliff = women appointed during CRISIS. | Progress YES. Full equality NO. Formal equality exists; substantive equality is incomplete.
Common Errors: Watch Out! Students often make mistakes here. Wrong: Gender inequality no longer exists because women have equal rights under the law. Correct: While legal equality exists, substantive inequality persists: 8% pay gap, only 10% of FTSE 100 CEOs are women, women do twice as much unpaid care work, domestic violence affects 1 in 4 women. Legal equality is necessary but not sufficient.
Stretch & Challenge (Grade 8-9):
  • Synoptic links: explain how gender & inequality connects to another Sociology topic you have studied
  • Real-world: research one real-world use or example of gender & inequality
  • Critical: "What are the limitations of the models used in gender & inequality?"
