Lesson 2: Core Concepts: forms of worship

Duration: 50 minutes

Starter Activity (5 minutes)

Review Previous Lesson

Quick recap: write 3 key points from Lesson 1 on forms of worship. Check them against the notes below.

Main Content (35 minutes)

Key Fact: Jesus said "Where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them" (Matthew 18:20). Christians believe worship can be both corporate (together) and private (individual).
Exam Tip: When comparing worship styles, remember that both have the same purpose (honouring God) but different methods. Catholic and Anglican Christians tend to prefer liturgical worship; Baptist, Methodist and Pentecostal Christians prefer non-liturgical or informal worship.
RS Exam Tips — Forms of Worship: 1. For Forms of Worship questions, always include specific scriptural or source references where relevant 2. Explain both religious and non-religious viewpoints 3. Use specialist vocabulary precisely (e.g. terms from the specification) 4. Evaluate by analysing strengths and weaknesses of different views before reaching your conclusion 5. Link your discussion of Forms of Worship to its real-world impact on believers and society

Practice (10 minutes)

Q: Explain two different forms of Christian worship.

Answer: 1) Liturgical worship follows a set structure with formal prayers, readings and sacraments. The Catholic Mass is an example — it has a fixed order including the Kyrie, Gloria, readings, Eucharistic prayer and Holy Communion. 2) Non-liturgical worship is more spontaneous and informal. Baptist and Pentecostal services often include modern worship songs, extemporary prayer and a sermon, without a fixed order of service.

Lesson 3: Application: forms of worship

Duration: 50 minutes

Starter Activity (5 minutes)

Quick Recall

Recall the key terms: Exam Tip, RS Exam Tips — Forms of Worship. Define each in one sentence.

Main Content (35 minutes)

Parent/Teacher Guide: Let your student attempt each question alone first, then compare with the model answer. Award method marks for correct working even if the final answer is wrong.

Q1: Explain two different forms of Christian worship.

Q2: "Liturgical worship is better than non-liturgical worship." Evaluate this statement.

Answer: Some Christians prefer liturgical worship because it connects them to centuries of tradition, provides structure and reverence, and follows Jesus' instruction to "do this in remembrance of me" at the Last Supper. Others prefer non-liturgical worship because it feels more personal and authentic, allows the Holy Spirit to guide the service, and uses contemporary language that speaks to modern people. Both forms honour God — the choice depends on denomination and personal preference.

Duration: 50 minutes

Starter Activity (5 minutes)

Command Words

Review what these command words require: state (one point), describe (say what happens), explain (say why), compare (both sides), evaluate (judgement).

Main Content (35 minutes)

Exam-Style Question

Attempt a past-paper style question on forms of worship from the exam board past paper finder (see Resources), then mark it against the scheme.

Exam Tips: Always refer to specific sources of authority (scripture, sacred texts, religious leaders) | Explain contrasting beliefs — different views within and between traditions | Use key terminology precisely (e.g. tawhid, atonement, sanctity of life) | For 12-mark evaluation questions, consider both sides before reaching a justified conclusion | Link beliefs to their impact on individuals, communities and society | Acknowledge diversity — no religious tradition has a single, uniform view
Common Errors: Watch Out! Students often think all Christians celebrate the Eucharist in the same way. Wrong: "All Christians believe the bread and wine literally become Jesus' body and blood." Correct: "Catholics believe in transubstantiation; Protestants have different views including consubstantiation and memorial symbolism."
Stretch & Challenge (Grade 8-9):
  • Synoptic links: explain how forms of worship connects to another Religious Studies topic you have studied
  • Real-world: research one real-world use or example of forms of worship
  • Critical: "What are the limitations of the models used in forms of worship?"
