Answer: Catholics do not permit divorce because marriage is a sacrament and Jesus taught "let no one separate" what God has joined (Mark 10:9). However, annulment is possible if the marriage was never valid. In contrast, Islam allows divorce as a last resort. Marriage is a contract (nikah) rather than a sacrament, so it can be dissolved. Both husbands (talaq) and wives (khula) can initiate divorce, though there is a waiting period to allow reconciliation. Islam sees divorce as permitted but disliked by Allah.
