Answer: VAR (Video Assistant Referee) uses video technology to review four types of incident in football: goals, penalties, red cards and mistaken identity. The VAR team watches the game remotely and alerts the on-field referee to clear and obvious errors. The referee can then review the footage on a pitchside monitor or accept the VAR recommendation. Positive impacts: corrects obvious errors, ensures fairer outcomes, increases confidence in refereeing. Negative impacts: causes long delays, disrupts the flow of the game, can still be subjective, creates confusion over what constitutes a "clear and obvious error," and delays celebrations while checks are carried out.

Answer: Performance analysis technology has changed coaching by: (1) GPS tracking provides data on distance covered, speed and heart rate, allowing coaches to manage player workload and prevent injury. (2) Video analysis software enables frame-by-frame technique review, identifying specific areas for improvement. (3) Data analytics inform tactical decisions - coaches can analyse opposition patterns and adjust strategies. (4) Wearable technology provides real-time feedback during training sessions. Coaches now make decisions based on objective data rather than just observation and experience.

Q5: Why were full-body polyurethane swimming suits banned in 2010? What does this tell us about the relationship between technology and sport?

Answer: Full-body polyurethane swimming suits (e.g. LZR Racer by Speedo) were banned because they provided an unfair advantage through improved buoyancy and reduced drag. Over 40 world records were broken in 2009 alone, largely attributed to the suits rather than swimmer ability. This tells us that technology can go too far when it becomes the primary factor in performance rather than the athlete's skill and fitness. Governing bodies must regulate technology to ensure it supports fair competition rather than distorting it. FINA banned the suits, limiting swimsuits to textile materials and specific coverage.
