Teaching Script (35 mins): Mins 0-5 - Hook: "Today: fitness testing. By the end you will be able to answer exam questions on it unaided. It connects to the rest of Physical Education because the ideas here recur across the spec." Mins 5-20 - Direct Instruction: Work through the core ideas below one at a time; after each, ask your student to explain it back in their own words. Mins 20-30 - Guided Practice: Model the worked example together, then let your student attempt the first practice question with guidance. Mins 30-35 - Independent Practice: 2-3 practice questions from Lesson 3 below, with immediate feedback.

Main Content (35 minutes)
Reasons for fitness testing: Identify strengths and weaknesses - find out which components of fitness need improvement Monitor progress - compare test results over time to see if training is working Set baseline scores - establish starting points for setting targets and designing training programmes Compare against normative data - see how results compare to national averages for age and gender Provide motivation - give performers targets to aim for and a sense of achievement Assess suitability for a sport - determine if fitness levels meet the demands of a specific activity
Normative data: is a set of reference values (averages) that allow you to compare your test results against typical scores for your age and gender. Without normative data, a test score is just a number with no context.
Limitations: Fitness tests are not perfect measures. They have several limitations that must be considered:

Agility
Run through a course of cones set out in a 10m × 5m grid, including changes of direction, slalom sections and acceleration. Timed to the nearest 0.1 second.
Stork Stand Test
Balance (static)
Stand on one foot with the other foot placed against the supporting knee. Hands on hips. Time how long balance is maintained without the foot moving or hands leaving hips.
Multi-Stage Fitness Test (Beep Test)
Cardiovascular endurance
Run 20m shuttles in time with audio beeps that get progressively faster. Continue until unable to keep up with the beeps on two consecutive occasions. Score is the level and shuttle reached.
Wall Toss Test
Coordination (hand-eye)
Stand 2m from a wall. Throw a tennis ball against the wall with one hand and catch it with the other. Count the number of successful catches in 30 seconds.
Sit and Reach Test
Flexibility (hamstrings, lower back)
Sit on the floor with legs straight and feet flat against the sit-and-reach box. Reach forward as far as possible without bending the knees. Measure the distance reached in cm.
Sit-Up Bleep Test
Muscular endurance (abdominals)
Perform sit-ups in time with audio beeps that get progressively faster. Continue until unable to maintain the required pace. Score is the level reached.
Vertical Jump Test (Sargent Jump)
Power (leg)
Stand side-on to a wall and reach up with one hand (standing reach). Jump as high as possible and touch the wall at the highest point. Subtract standing reach from jump height. Measured in cm.
Ruler Drop Test
Reaction time
A partner holds a 30cm ruler vertically, with the 0cm mark between the thumb and forefinger of the person being tested. The ruler is released without warning. The distance the ruler falls before being caught is measured. Convert distance to time using the formula t = √(2d/g).

(3) Motivation - results depend on effort; low motivation produces artificially low scores. (Other valid: environmental factors, measurement error, not sport-specific, one-off testing.)

Answer: Normative data is a set of reference values (averages) for different age groups and genders. It is important because it provides context for test results - without it, a score is just a number. Normative data allows you to determine whether a score is above average, average or below average for a particular population.

Exam Tips: You MUST know which test measures which component - this is a very common matching question | Learn the basic protocol for each test (you don't need exact cone positions, but know the general procedure) | Be ready to explain limitations - "not sport-specific" is the most important limitation | Normative data gives CONTEXT to scores - always mention this when discussing test interpretation | The Multi-Stage Fitness Test is the most commonly tested - know it in detail | Understand the difference between validity (does it measure what it claims?) and reliability (is it consistent?)
Common Errors: Watch Out! Students often think fitness and health are the same thing. Wrong: Fitness and health are the same thing Correct: Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being (WHO). Fitness is the ability to meet the demands of the environment. You can be fit but unhealthy (e.g. a marathon runner with flu). Students often think static stretching is the best warm-up. Wrong: Static stretching is the best warm-up Correct: Current evidence suggests dynamic stretching is more effective in warm-ups as it mimics sporting movements.
