Exam Tips: V-rule: V in valley points toward dip direction for moderate dips | Horizontal beds: outcrop follows contours; Vertical beds: straight lines across topography | Unconformity: younger rocks cut across older rock boundaries on a map | Cross-sections: always draw topographic profile first, then project boundaries at correct dip angles
Common Errors: ✗ The V-rule always shows the dip direction ✓ The V-rule applies to moderate dips in valleys; for vertical beds the outcrop is straight, and for very steep dips the V can point upstream (opposite to dip direction) ✗ Strike and dip are the same thing ✓ Strike is the direction of a horizontal line on the surface; dip is the angle and direction of maximum slope, always perpendicular to strike ✗ An unconformity means the rocks below are missing ✓ An unconformity means there is a gap in the RECORD (time missing), not that rocks are missing; the rocks that were deposited during the gap were either never deposited or were eroded away before the younger rocks were laid down
