Lesson 2: Core Concepts: graphical and numerical skills

Main Content (35 minutes)

Definition: A line graph shows how a continuous variable changes over time or distance. The x-axis usually represents time or distance, and the y-axis represents the measured variable. Points are plotted and joined with straight lines or a curve of best fit.
Definition: A bar chart uses rectangular bars to compare discrete categories. The height (or length) of each bar represents the value. Bars can be vertical or horizontal. They should have gaps between them (unlike histograms).
Definition: A pie chart shows proportions of a whole as segments of a circle. The full circle (360°) represents the total, and each segment is proportional to the value it represents.
Definition: A scatter graph plots two variables against each other to test whether a relationship exists. Each point represents one observation. The pattern of points reveals the type and strength of correlation.
Definition: A population pyramid (age-sex pyramid) is a bar chart showing the age and sex structure of a population. Males are on the left, females on the right, with the youngest at the bottom and oldest at the top. The shape reveals a country's demographic characteristics.
Definition: A choropleth map uses different shades or colours to show the density or value of a variable across areas. Darker shading usually indicates higher values. Common for population density, GNI per head, or development indicators.

Answer: A simple bar chart has one bar per category showing a single value (e.g. GNI per head for different countries). A compound bar chart divides each bar into sections showing subcategories (e.g. energy mix for each country, with coal, gas, nuclear, and renewable as sections within each bar). Simple bars are best for comparing one variable; compound bars are best when you want to compare both totals and composition.

Q1: Explain the difference between a simple bar chart and a compound bar chart, giving a geographical example of when each would be used.

Answer: A simple bar chart has one bar per category showing a single value (e.g. GNI per head for different countries). A compound bar chart divides each bar into sections showing subcategories (e.g. energy mix for each country, with coal, gas, nuclear, and renewable as sections within each bar). Simple bars are best for comparing one variable; compound bars are best when you want to compare both totals and composition.

Q2: A country's population is 32 million and its area is 256,000 km². Calculate its population density.

Answer: Population density = Total population ÷ Total area = 32,000,000 ÷ 256,000 = 125 people per km².

Q3: Describe the characteristics of a population pyramid for a country in Stage 4 of the DTM.

Answer: A Stage 4 population pyramid has a narrow base (low birth rate), relatively straight sides (low death rate across all ages), a wide middle section (large working-age population), and a widening top (increasing elderly population and high life expectancy). The shape is more rectangular/concave than a Stage 2 or 3 pyramid. An ageing population creates pressure on pensions and healthcare. Examples: UK, France, Australia.

Q4: Explain the difference between a choropleth map and a dot map. When might each be more appropriate?

Answer: A choropleth map shades areas by value (darker = higher), good for showing density or averages across defined areas (e.g. population density by region). A dot map uses dots to represent individual occurrences or quantities at specific locations, good for showing actual distribution (e.g. where people live). Choropleth is better for continuous data averaged over areas; dot maps are better for showing spatial clustering and the actual location of features.

Q5: A country's GDP per capita increased from $2,400 to $3,600 over ten years. Calculate the percentage increase.

Answer: Percentage increase = ((3,600 − 2,400) ÷ 2,400) × 100 = (1,200 ÷ 2,400) × 100 = 0.5 × 100 = 50% increase.

Q6: Explain the difference between interpolation and extrapolation on a scatter graph, and which is more reliable.

Answer: Interpolation estimates a value within the range of existing data points on a scatter graph - reading off the line of best fit between two known values. Extrapolation extends the line of best fit beyond the data range to estimate values for which no data exists. Interpolation is more reliable because it is based on the established trend within the known data range, whereas extrapolation assumes the trend continues in the same way, which may not be true.

Common Errors: Watch Out! Students often write vague answers without specific geographical evidence. Wrong: Writing generalised statements like 'it causes problems' Correct: Using specific data and named examples, e.g. 'the 2010 Haiti earthquake killed over 200,000 people due to poor building quality' Students often confuse causes and effects. Wrong: Mixing up what caused the event with what resulted from it Correct: Clearly separate causes (why it happened) from effects (what happened as a result) Students often describe rather than evaluate.
