Key Fact: Destructive testing damages or destroys the test specimen: tensile testing, impact testing, fatigue testing and hardness testing.
Key Fact: Non-destructive testing (NDT) evaluates components without damage: visual inspection, ultrasonic, X-ray, dye penetrant and magnetic particle testing.
Key Fact: Tensile testing stretches a specimen to failure, measuring yield strength, UTS, ductility (elongation) and elastic modulus.
Key Fact: Hardness testing presses an indenter into the surface: Brinell (ball), Vickers (diamond pyramid), Rockwell (ball or cone).

Exam-Style Question

Attempt a past-paper style question on testing methods from the exam board past paper finder (see Resources), then mark it against the scheme.

Exam Tips: Distinguish clearly between destructive (specimen damaged) and non-destructive (component intact) testing. | In tensile test questions, identify the key points on the stress-strain curve: elastic limit, yield point, UTS, fracture. | NDT questions: name the specific method AND explain what type of defect it detects (surface vs internal). | Tolerance questions: state the maximum and minimum acceptable values explicitly. | Quality control vs quality assurance: QC checks the product; QA ensures the process is correct.
Common Errors: ✗ Non-destructive testing cannot find internal defects. ✓ Ultrasonic and X-ray testing can detect internal defects such as porosity, cracks and inclusions without damaging the component. ✗ Tensile testing can be done on the actual product. ✓ Tensile testing is destructive, so it is performed on specially prepared test specimens, not the finished product. ✗ A tighter tolerance always means a better product. ✓ Tighter tolerances increase manufacturing cost and time significantly; the tolerance must be appropriate to the function, not as tight as possible. ✗ Visual inspection can detect all defects. ✓ Visual inspection only finds surface defects visible to the eye; internal defects and fine sur
