Common Errors: ✗ Annealing makes metal harder. ✓ Annealing makes metal softer and more ductile; hardening makes it harder. ✗ Tempering and annealing are the same. ✓ Tempering reduces brittleness after hardening (moderate heat); annealing fully softens the metal (high heat, slow cool). ✗ Galvanising only protects the coated area. ✓ Zinc provides sacrificial protection: even if scratched, the nearby zinc corrodes preferentially, protecting exposed steel. ✗ Electroplating makes the component stronger. ✓ Electroplating provides surface properties (corrosion resistance, appearance, hardness) but does not change the bulk mechanical strength of the component.
