Teaching Script (35 mins): Mins 0-5 - Hook: "Today: natural and manufactured timber. By the end you will be able to answer exam questions on it unaided. It connects to the rest of Design and Technology because the ideas here recur across the spec." Mins 5-20 - Direct Instruction: Work through the core ideas below one at a time; after each, ask your student to explain it back in their own words. Mins 20-30 - Guided Practice: Model the worked example together, then let your student attempt the first practice question with guidance. Mins 30-35 - Independent Practice: 2-3 practice questions from Lesson 3 below, with immediate feedback.

A grade 9 response will: identify ash properties (excellent steam-bending, attractive grain, strong and flexible); identify plywood properties (can be laminated into curves, dimensionally stable); conclude: ash for premium one-off chairs, plywood for mass production.
Exam Tips: Hardwood/softwood is about tree type, NOT wood hardness (balsa is a hardwood but very soft) | Always mention FSC certification when discussing timber sustainability | MDF dust is a specific health hazard - examiners test this
Common Errors: Watch Out! Students often make mistakes here. Wrong: Hardwoods are called hardwoods because they are always harder and stronger than softwoods. Correct: Hardwood/softwood refers to the tree type (deciduous vs coniferous), NOT wood hardness. Balsa is a hardwood but one of the softest timbers. Yew is a softwood but extremely hard and dense.
