Main Content (35 minutes)

Teaching Script (35 mins): Mins 0-5 - Hook: "Today: papers and boards. By the end you will be able to answer exam questions on it unaided. It connects to the rest of Design and Technology because the ideas here recur across the spec." Mins 5-20 - Direct Instruction: Work through the core ideas below one at a time; after each, ask your student to explain it back in their own words. Mins 20-30 - Guided Practice: Model the worked example together, then let your student attempt the first practice question with guidance. Mins 30-35 - Independent Practice: 2-3 practice questions from Lesson 3 below, with immediate feedback.

Answer: Corrugated board's fluted structure creates air gaps between liners - this gives excellent compressive strength and cushioning while remaining lightweight. Solid cardboard of the same weight would be thinner and offer no cushioning.

Parent/Teacher Guide: Let your student attempt each question alone first, then compare with the model answer. Award method marks for correct working even if the final answer is wrong.

Answer: Corrugated board's fluted structure creates air gaps between liners - this gives excellent compressive strength and cushioning while remaining lightweight. Solid cardboard of the same weight would be thinner and offer no cushioning.

A grade 9 response will: identify inner insert requirements (cushioning, precise cut-out for bottle, lightweight, no scratching); select foam-core or moulded pulp board. Outer box requirements (rigidity, premium surface, clean fold lines); select solid white board or rigid box board (500+ gsm) with wrap-around print.
Exam Tips: Always specify the GSM when discussing paper weight | Link board structure to function - explain WHY corrugated's fluting provides strength | Know the difference between paper (below 200 gsm) and board (above 200 gsm)
Common Errors: Watch Out! Students often make mistakes here. Wrong: Thicker paper is always better because it is stronger and more professional. Correct: Thickness must suit the function: tissue paper is perfect for delicate gift wrap; tracing paper needs translucency; cartridge paper needs weight and texture. Over-specifying GSM wastes material and increases cost.
