Teaching Script (35 mins): Mins 0-5 - Hook: "Today: selection of materials and components. By the end you will be able to answer exam questions on it unaided. It connects to the rest of Design and Technology because the ideas here recur across the spec." Mins 5-20 - Direct Instruction: Work through the core ideas below one at a time; after each, ask your student to explain it back in their own words. Q2: A designer must choose between aluminium and polypropylene for a kitchen utensil handle. Justify using at least four criteria.
Answer: Function: handle must insulate - PP wins over aluminium. Weight: PP lightweight, aluminium heavier. Cost: PP cheap and easy to mould; aluminium requires die-casting. Durability: aluminium resists staining; PP may stain. Recommendation: PP for budget, aluminium with silicone overmould for premium.

Common Errors: Watch Out! Students often make mistakes here. Wrong: The cheapest material is always the best choice because it maximises profit. Correct: Initial cost is only one factor. A cheap material may fail in use (warranty claims), require expensive processing, have limited availability, or be unsustainable. Total cost includes material + processing + assembly + QC + returns + disposal. A more expensive material may reduce total cost by simplifying processing.
