Main Content (35 minutes)

Teaching Script (35 mins): Mins 0-5 - Hook: "Today: textiles and fibres. By the end you will be able to answer exam questions on it unaided. It connects to the rest of Design and Technology because the ideas here recur across the spec." Mins 5-20 - Direct Instruction: Work through the core ideas below one at a time; after each, ask your student to explain it back in their own words. Mins 20-30 - Guided Practice: Model the worked example together, then let your student attempt the first practice question with guidance. Mins 30-35 - Independent Practice: 2-3 practice questions from Lesson 3 below, with immediate feedback.

A grade 9 response will: identify requirements (moisture-wicking, lightweight, quick-drying); 100% cotton - absorbs sweat, heavy when wet; 100% polyester - wicks moisture, quick-drying, retains shape; cotton-poly blend - compromise but not enough wicking. Conclude: 100% polyester (or polyester-elastane blend) for performance running wear.

Common Errors: Watch Out! Students often make mistakes here. Wrong: Natural fibres are always more environmentally friendly than synthetic fibres. Correct: Cotton needs approx 10,000 litres of water per kg, heavy pesticide use. Polyester uses less water but consumes fossil fuels and sheds microplastics. A full LCA shows neither is clearly superior - organic cotton reduces pesticides; recycled polyester reduces fossil fuel dependence.
