Exam-Style Question

Attempt a past-paper style question on dance styles & genres from the exam board past paper finder (see Resources), then mark it against the scheme.

Exam Tips: Always name the specific style and describe its technical features when analysing a professional work | Use style-specific vocabulary such as 'turnout', 'release', 'syncopation' rather than generic terms | When comparing styles, discuss at least two contrasting features such as posture, dynamics or use of space | Link style features directly to the choreographer's intention — do not just list characteristics | Remember that many professional works blend styles; be precise about which elements come from which tradition
Common Errors: ✗ Contemporary dance is just ballet done slowly. ✓ Contemporary dance is a distinct style using release technique, floor work and weight; it is fundamentally different from ballet in posture, use of gravity and movement quality. ✗ Street dance and hip-hop are the same style. ✓ Hip-hop is a specific culture that includes breaking, locking and popping; street dance is a broader term covering informal urban dance styles, some of which overlap with hip-hop. ✗ World dance is not relevant to AQA 8236. ✓ World dance styles influence many contemporary choreographers and may feature in prescribed works; understanding them supports analysis and comparison. ✗ Jazz dance is just dancing to jazz music. ✓
Stretch & Challenge (Grade 8-9):
  • Synoptic links: explain how dance styles & genres connects to another Dance topic you have studied
  • Real-world: research one real-world use or example of dance styles & genres
  • Critical: "What are the limitations of the models used in dance styles & genres?"
