Exam-Style Question

Attempt a past-paper style question on dance structure & form from the exam board past paper finder (see Resources), then mark it against the scheme.

Exam Tips: Use the correct letter patterns (AB, ABA, ABACADA) when describing structures | Always explain why a choreographer chose that structure — link it to intention | In NEA written tasks, name your structure and justify how it supports your idea | For professional works, identify the structure and explain how it shapes the audience experience | Remember that structure and form are used interchangeably in AQA 8236
Common Errors: ✗ Binary form means two dancers performing together. ✓ Binary form is a two-part structure with contrasting sections labelled A and B — it is about the organisation of the piece, not the number of dancers. ✗ Ternary form is ABC — three different sections. ✓ Ternary form is ABA — the A section returns after the B contrast, creating a three-part structure with repetition. ✗ Abstract structure means the dance has no structure. ✓ Abstract structure is still carefully organised — it is structured around movement ideas and qualities rather than a narrative storyline. ✗ Rondo form only has two sections that alternate. ✓ Rondo form has a recurring main theme (A) alternating with different episodes (
Stretch & Challenge (Grade 8-9):
  • Synoptic links: explain how dance structure & form connects to another Dance topic you have studied
  • Real-world: research one real-world use or example of dance structure & form
  • Critical: "What are the limitations of the models used in dance structure & form?"
