Xenia was a central value in the Odyssey, but not clearly more important than loyalty, cunning or family. Xenia structures many episodes: the Phaeacians show ideal hospitality, Eumaeus demonstrates true xenia despite poverty, and the suitors are killed for violating it. The code is divinely enforced by Zeus Xenios, giving it religious authority other values lack. The suitors' deaths show that violating xenia is a capital offence. However, loyalty is equally central — Penelope's faithfulness for twenty years, Eumaeus's devotion and Argos's patient waiting show that loyalty drives the poem's emotional power. Cunning (metis) is fundamental — Odysseus's entire strategy depends on it. Family bonds are the deepest motivation — Odysseus endures twenty years of suffering to return to Penelope and Telemachus. In conclusion, xenia was one of several equally important values. Its divine enforcement makes it uniquely powerful, but loyalty, cunning and family love are equally essential to the poem's meaning and to Odysseus's success.
