Exam Tips: Magnification formula is often tested — know M = f_obj / f_eye | Reflectors solve chromatic aberration — this is the #1 advantage | Space telescopes: no atmosphere = no distortion + access to blocked wavelengths | Both boards test telescope types and their comparative advantages
Common Errors: ✗ Higher magnification always gives better images ✓ Magnification without adequate aperture produces dim, blurry images; resolving power and light-gathering depend on aperture, not magnification ✗ Radio telescopes need clear skies like optical telescopes ✓ Radio telescopes can observe through clouds and during the day — radio waves pass through the atmosphere and are not affected by weather ✗ Space telescopes are always better than ground-based ✓ Space telescopes are expensive, limited in size and difficult to maintain; large ground-based telescopes with adaptive optics can be equally effective for many observations
