Teaching Script (35 mins):
Mins 0-5 - Hook: "Today: architectural and interior design. By the end you will be able to answer exam questions on it unaided. It connects to the rest of Art and Design because the ideas here recur across the spec."

Key Fact: Spatial planning considers how people move through and use spaces — function, flow and atmosphere are key.

A grade 9 response will: produce accurate scale drawings; build a refined architectural model; explain how the design responds to site and context; consider lighting, materials and atmosphere; annotate with specialist vocabulary (plan, elevation, section, spatial flow); evaluate the design's effectiveness. Mark scheme: AO1 (develop through investigation) + AO2 (refine through experimentation) + AO3 (record ideas and observations) + AO4 (present personal response) = total marks

Common Errors: Watch Out! Students often make mistakes with this topic. Wrong: Architectural design is just about drawing nice-looking buildings. Correct: Architectural design must address FUNCTION (how spaces are used), STRUCTURE (how the building stands up), CONTEXT (how it responds to its site and community), SUSTAINABILITY (energy efficiency, materials) and ATMOSPHERE (how it feels to be there) — not just appearance.
